The resurrection of Jesus Christ propelled the disciples to spread the good news throughout the known world. As they won converts and the movement grew, names were attached to this group of Christ followers. They were called Galileans, Nazarenes, Christians, and Followers of the Way.
This last title is mentioned twice in Acts 19, the text from this past Sunday’s sermon. Here are 4 truths of the designation Followers of the Way:
It is not our own way but His Way. Jesus said in John 14:6 “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the father but through me.” If we follow our own way it will lead to destruction, but if we follow His Way it will lead to life. So, submit yourself to His Way this week.
Every reference to this phrase in the book of Acts is surrounded by persecution. Followers of the Way are not passive but active shining the light of Jesus in a dark world. The Way is not ease but it is the only hope for sinful people. So, look for opportunities this week to share your faith on the Way.
The Way is clear because Christ has made the way. He has traveled this path before us through life, death, and resurrection. His Word is our map to help us walk in His Way. So, spend some time reading the Word this week.
We have the promise of His constant company as we travel this Way. He will never leave us or forsake us. He will go with us all the Way. So, learn to rest in his presence this week.
