Our spring missions focus this year will be a community-wide food drive benefitting Urban Ministries. Urban Ministries food pantry provides a week’s groceries to as many as 50 families each weekday. Last year, volunteers distributed over 270 tons of food and served more than 20,00 adults and 10,000 hungry children. Their self-service pantry model reduces food waste and affords greater dignity to those served. While the crisis is hunger, the opportunity is for health through nutrition. It begins by sourcing and providing fresh produce and other pantry staples. The time clients spend waiting is also an opportunity. Their Connector program engages clients in the waiting room to discover what other needs they may have and provide results-oriented referrals to community partners. Their goal is to maximize those opportunities by engaging clients to help make life-change possible.

So here is the plan! On Saturday, March 28, we will distribute collection bags with a flyer stating items needed and instructions on food collection to the houses around the church. We will also have flyers to put at local businesses. Our food collection day will be the following week on Saturday, April 4. There are two ways we will collect donations. Starting at 9 am that morning, we will go back to the houses and pick up bags that the resident was instructed to leave for us. Or if they did not receive a bag or just want to join in the fun, they can come to Kiwanis Park that evening from 5-7pm and drop off their donations. At the park, we will have food trucks, inflatables, an Easter Egg Hunt and music. It will be a block party! This will be an awesome night where we can support a local ministry, spread the love of Christ to our community, and invite everyone to our Easter service.
